The Cats Of Her Majesty's Royal Navy Fun Love
A history in photographs.
Ensign Smudge - Served 1914-1918
At just one year, Ensign Smudge left his family farm in Shropshire to sail on the HMS Vanguard. Smudge mostly stuck to the bilge of the ship, where he dispatched mice better than anyone in the Navy. He was awarded the 1914 Star and Victory campaign medals for valiant service.
Ordnance Officer Frisky - Served 1914-1920
Officer Frisky was Ordnance Officer aboard the first dreadnought-class battleship called the HMS Hercules. Frisky was responsible for arming the ship's three 21-inch torpedo tubes, but lacking opposable digits, he was ill-suited for the task. No cat has been promoted to Ordnance Officer since.
Commander Oscar - Served 1925-1936
Oscar joined the British Naval Academy in 1920, and quickly rose through the officer ranks. He took command of the HMS Hood in 1933, after which he led several peace-time missions in the oceans outside Japan. It's believed now that his heavy campaigning in the area was motivated mostly by the quality of the seafood.
Shipwright Jaspar - Served 1938-1950
Pictured here early in his career, enjoying a smoke aboard the HMS George, Shipwright Jaspar was one of the team of support staff employed by the Royal Navy to maintain the fleet. He died of feline emphysema in 1966.
